NAPLAN STANDS FOR THE NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAMMES - LITERACY AND NUMERACY.
NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9, since 2008.
NAPLAN tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.
The tests cover skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, English Grammar, Punctuation) and Numeracy.
The assessments are undertaken every year, nationwide, in the second full week in May
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas or domains of:1) Reading2) Writing3) Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation)4) Numeracy.
NAPLAN tests skills in Literacy and Numeracy that are developed over time through the School Curriculum.
The National Assessment Programme which includes the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is run and managed by ACARA (The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) at the direction of the Education Council (previously known as SCSEEC).
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is The Independent Statutory Authority responsible for the overall management of The Australian National Assessment Program, in collaboration with representatives from all states and territories and non-government school sectors.

In the English learning area of each State and Territory Curriculum, students develop Language and Literacy Skills and then apply these skills across a full range of learning areas.
The NAPLAN Reading Tests measure Literacy Proficiency across the English learning area in line with the Australian Curriculum: English.
These tests focus on the Reading of Written English. Knowledge and Interpretation of Language Conventions in context are also an important part of Reading and are drawn upon in many Reading questions.
In the tests, students are provided with a magazine containing a range of texts that illustrate different Writing styles. Students read the texts provided then answer related questions in a separate booklet.
The skills demonstrated in Reading are dependent on the complexity and accessibility of the text.
Typically, students engage with more complex texts as their Reading comprehension skills improve. There is a very wide range of Reading Ability Levels at each school year level so the tests start with simpler, shorter texts and get increasingly longer and harder.
Types of skills and understandings that, students are generally expected to demonstrate at their particular year of schooling are described in the Minimum Standards for Reading.

writing

The Australian Curriculum: English requires students to be taught a variety of forms of Writing at school.
The three main text types (previously called genres), that are taught are, Imaginative Writing (including Narrative Writing), Informative Writing and Persuasive Writing.
In the Writing Tests, students are provided with a ‘Writing Stimulus’ (sometimes called a Prompt – an Idea or a Topic) and asked to write a response in a particular text type.
To date, the text types that students have been tested on, are Narrative Writing and Persuasive Writing. Informative Writing has not yet been tested by NAPLAN.
The Writing task targets the full range of student capabilities expected of students from Years 3 to Year 9. The same marking guide is used to assess all students' Writing, allowing for a national comparison of student Writing capabilities across these year levels.
NATIONAL MINIMUM STANDARDS
The National Minimum Standards for Writing describe some of the skills and understandings that students can generally be expected to demonstrate at their particular year of schooling.
The Standards are intended to be a snapshot of typical achievement and do not describe the full range of what students are taught or what they may achieve.

language conventions

the language conventions

The Language Conventions Tests, assess Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation.
Literacy knowledge and skills are essential to effective communication across all learning areas. However, the tools of Language, including Language Conventions, are explicitly developed in the English learning area.
Therefore, the content assessed in the Language Conventions tests is aligned to the Australian School Curriculum: English.
The Language Conventions Tests focus on the use and knowledge of Language Conventions in Written Standard Australian English.
These skills are essential to the development of Reading and Writing. The content of the Language Conventions tests particularly complements the Writing Tests where Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation are explicitly assessed in the context.
However, students’ understanding of Language Conventions is also necessary for Reading.
MINIMUM STANDARDS
National Minimum Standards describe some of the skills and understandings that students are generally expected to demonstrate at their particular year of schooling.
There are two sets of Minimum Standards for Language Conventions – Minimum Standards for Spelling, and Minimum Standards for Grammar and Punctuation.
This is because, it is not possible to establish a single assessment scale for all of these areas.
The standards are intended to be a snapshot of typical achievement and do not describe the full range of what students are taught or what they may achieve.

numeracy

The NAPLAN Numeracy Tests, measure the achievement of students in Numeracy.
The main reference for Numeracy as well as Mathematical Knowledge, Skills and Understanding, is the Australian School Curriculum: Mathematics.
The Numeracy Tests, assess the Proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem-solving and Reasoning across the three content strands of Mathematics: Numbers and Algebra; Measurement and Geometry; and Statistics and Probability.
The papers, Numeracy Tests, contain two types of items: Multiple-choice and Constructed Response.
The Online Numeracy Tests contain Multiple-choice and Constructed Response items as well as technologically-enhanced items.
YEAR 7 AND YEAR 9 TESTS
The NAPLAN Numeracy Tests for Year 7 and Year 9 students were updated in 2017 to be consistent with the expectations of the Australian School Curriculum and other NAPLAN Domains.
Since 2017, the Year 7 and Year 9 Numeracy Tests have been conducted as one test session instead of two test sessions (one test paper instead of two test papers).
For both paper and online modes of delivery, Year 7 and Year 9 Numeracy Tests have two sections (in the one test). There is a short Non-calculator Section, consisting of 8 questions, in which students are required to demonstrate Arithmetical Calculation Skills.
For the remainder (second section) of the test, calculators are permitted, even if they are not necessary to answer the question.
MINIMUM STANDARDS
The Minimum Standards for Numeracy describe some of the skills and understandings that students are generally expected to demonstrate at their particular year of schooling.
The standards are intended to be a snapshot of typical achievement and do not describe the full range of what students are taught or what they may achieve.
