UCAT STANDS FOR UNIVERSITY CLINICAL APTITUDE TEST
Students who are interested in applying into undergraduate courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences in certain universities in Australia are required to sit for the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) from 2019, for university entry in 2020.
The formerly similar test known as UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test), which has been administered by ACER would be replaced by UCAT in 2019.
UMAT is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of the UMAT Consortium universities. The test is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into the Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science Degree Programmes at undergraduate level at various participating universities.
Prospective applicants to the Graduate Entry Programmes in Medicine or Dentistry at universities offering Graduate Entry in Medicine and Dentistry must take the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) is an independent, not-for-profit research organisation established in Australia as a company limited by guarantee.

the ucat consortium

From 2019, for Undergraduate University Entry into Medicine, Dentistry and several Health Science Courses in 2020, the UMAT Consortium of Universities, have made the decision to replace the UMAT Test previously used by the Consortium Member Universities, with the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test).
The new Consortium is tentatively and informally known as the UCAT ANZ Consortium and will oversee the delivery of the new UCAT Test in Australia and New Zealand.
The UCAT ANZ Consortium is part of a wider collaboration with a similar group of leading UK universities (currently known internationally in the field of Medical and Dental Admissions as the UKCAT Consortium).
The UKCAT Consortium is a charity and limited company managed by a Consortium of UK Universities which require the test for entry into their Medical, Dental, Clinical Sciences Courses and Programmes.
The UCAT ANZ Consortium is committed to fairness and equity in the selections of students into Medicine, Dentistry and the Clinical sciences.
ITS AIMS ARE TO:
- achieve greater fairness in the selection by helping Medical schools discriminate among candidates with equivalent qualifications
- widen participation in Medical, Dental and Clinical Sciences training of under-represented social groups
- identify the characteristics in applicants which will make them good Dentists, Doctors and Clinicians
The UCAT ANZ Consortium will partner with Pearson VUE to deliver the test on an annual basis.

ucat anz test format

The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based test.
It assesses a range of Mental Abilities identified by universities as important to practicing in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Clinical Sciences.
It consists of five separately timed subtests, in which, each contain a number of questions in a multiple-choice format.
The test cannot be paused for a break once started. However, there will be a timed instruction section, before the start of each subtest.
Candidates either sit the standard test or an extended version of the test if they are entitled to extra time due to a documented medical condition or disability.

THE FIVE SUBTESTS ARE:

1) verbal reasoning

Assesses the ability to critically evaluate information presented in a written form.
The Verbal Reasoning subtest assesses candidates’ abilities to read and think carefully about information presented in passages and to determine whether specific conclusions can be drawn from the information presented.
Candidates are not expected to use prior knowledge to answer the questions.
WHY VERBAL REASONING?
Doctors and Dentists need excellent verbal reasoning skills in order to understand complex information. The ability to communicate this information clearly and simply to patients is essential.
Medical practitioners must also be able to interpret findings from published materials and apply this to their own practice.
It is essential that, they are able to critique such materials and draw their own conclusions as to the validity of any findings.
VERBAL REASONING ITEMS
Candidates will be presented with eleven passages of text. Every passage is associated with 4 questions. Candidates have 21 minutes to answer the 44 questions in this subtest.
Some questions assess critical reasoning skills, requiring candidates to make inferences and draw conclusions from information.
Candidates will need to read the passage of text carefully. Candidates will then be presented with a question or incomplete statement and four response options. Candidates are required to pick the best or most suitable response. Candidates will only be able to select one response.
For other questions, candidates’ tasks are to read each passage of text carefully and then decide whether the statement provided follows logically.
There are three answer options candidates can choose from:
True: On the basis of the information in the passage, the statement is true.
False: On the basis of the information in the passage, the statement is false.
Can’t Tell: Candidate cannot tell from the information in the passage whether the statement is true or false.

2) decision making

Assesses the ability to make sound decisions and judgements using complex information.
The Decision Making subtest assesses candidates' abilities to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion, evaluate arguments and analyse statistical information.
WHY DECISION MAKING?
Doctors and Dentists are often required to make decisions in situations that may be complex. This requires high-level Problem Solving Skills and the ability to assess and manage risk and deal with uncertainty.
DECISION MAKING ITEMS
Candidates will be presented with 29 questions that may refer to texts, charts, tables, graphs or diagrams. Additional information may be presented within the question itself.
Candidates will have 31 minutes to answer the questions in this subtest.
All questions are standalone and do not share data. Some questions will have four answer options but only one correct answer; others will require candidates to respond to five statements by placing a 'Yes' or 'No' answer next to each statement.

3) quantitative reasoning

Assesses the ability to critically evaluate information presented in a Numerical Form.
The Quantitative Reasoning subtest assesses candidates abilities to use Numerical Skills to solve problems.
It assumes familiarity with numbers to the standard of a good pass at GCSE.
However questions are less to do with Numerical Facility and more to do with Problem Solving.
WHY QUANTITATIVE REASONING?
Doctors and Dentists are constantly required to review data and apply them to their own practice.
On the practical level, the amount of drug calculations, based on the patient weight, age and other factors have to be correct and accurate.
At a more advanced level, clinical research requires an ability to interpret, critique and apply results presented in the form of Complex Statistics.
Universities considering applicants need to know they have the Aptitude to cope with these situations.
QUANTITATIVE REASONING ITEMS
Candidates will be presented with 36 questions associated with tables, charts, and/or graphs. Candidates will have 24 minutes to answer the questions in this subtest.
Candidates are required to solve problems by extracting relevant information from tables and other numerical presentations.
Most questions will be shown as sets of four questions each connected to the same data.
There are some questions that are standalone and do not share data. Every question has five answer options. Candidates’s task is to choose the best option.
A simple on-screen calculator is available for use in this section. The calculator is integrated into the practice tests. It is strongly recommend that candidates familiarise themselves with using it. There are slight differences between the way the calculator works in the practice test environment and in the live test.

4) abstract reasoning

Assesses the use of convergent and divergent thinking to infer relationships from information.
Abstract Reasoning assesses candidates' abilities to identify patterns amongst abstract shapes where irrelevant and distracting materials may lead to incorrect conclusions.
The test therefore, measures candidates’ abilities to change track, critically evaluate and generate hypotheses and requires candidates to query judgements as they go along.
WHY ABSTRACT REASONING?
When considering possible diagnoses, Medical Practitioners may be presented with a set of symptoms and/or results. Some information may be more reliable, more relevant and clearer than other information.
Doctors and Dentists need to make judgements about such information, identifying the information which will help them reach conclusions.
Carrying out research involving data, often involves identifying patterns in the results, in order to generate further hypotheses.
ABSTRACT REASONING ITEMS
Candidates will be presented with 55 questions associated with sets of shapes. Candidates will have 13 minutes to answer the questions in this subtest.
Candidates will see all of these 4 different question types in this subtest:
For type 1, Candidates will be presented with two sets of shapes labelled “Set A” and “Set B”. Candidates will be given a test shape and asked to decide whether the test shape belongs to Set A, Set B, or Neither.
For type 2, Candidates will be presented with a series of shapes. Candidates will be asked to select the next shape in the series.
For type 3, candidates will be presented with a statement, involving a group of shapes. Candidates will be asked to determine which shape completes the statement.
For type 4, candidates will be presented with two sets of shapes labelled “Set A” and “Set B”. Candidates will be asked to select which of the four response options belongs to Set A or Set B.

5) situational judgement

The Situational Judgement Test (SJT), measures candidates' capacities to understand the real world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour in dealing with them.
WHY SITUATIONAL JUDGEMENT?
The test assesses integrity, perspective taking, team involvement, resilience and adaptability. SJTs are used widely in Medical and Dental Selection, including the selection of Foundation Doctors and Dentists, GPs and other Medical Specialities.
SITUATIONAL JUDGEMENT ITEMS
Candidates will be presented with 69 questions associated with 22 scenarios (with every scenario consisting of between 2 to 5 questions). Candidates will have 26 minutes to answer all the questions within the subtest.
The test consists of a series of scenarios for which candidates will need to consider, either, the appropriateness of possible actions, or, the importance of possible considerations.
Some of the questions will require that, candidates rate each response from four possible options.
Other questions will require candidates to choose the most and the least appropriate action to take in response to the situation, from the three actions provided.
Questions do not require medical or procedural knowledge.
