GAMSAT stands for Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test
Students who would like to study Medicine at most of the Universities in Australia that are offering Graduate Entry Medicine must sit for the GAMSAT.
GAMSAT is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in conjunction with the Consortium of Graduate Medical Schools to assist in the selection of students to participate in the Graduate-entry Programmes in Australia, Ireland and the UK (United Kingdom).
It is designed to assess the capacity to undertake high-level intellectual studies in the Medical and Health Professional Programmes.
The GAMSAT Test is offered twice a year, in March and September.
GAMSAT evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and the use of concepts in Basic Sciences as well as the acquisition of more general skills in Problem Solving, Critical Thinking and Writing.
Candidates whose first degree is in a non-scientific field of study can still sit for the GAMSAT and succeed in the application for admission to one of the Graduate-entry Programmes.
A Science degree is not always a prerequisite and institutions encourage applications from candidates who have achieved academic excellence in other fields.
However, it must be stressed that success in the GAMSAT is unlikely without knowledge and ability in the Biological and Physical Sciences.

THE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF GAMSAT
GAMSAT is divided into three sections designed to assess the performance in the areas of:
I) Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences II) Written Communication III) Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences
Since Problem-based Learning Techniques are central to the modern Medical Curricula, GAMSAT is constructed with a major focus on the assessment of Problem Solving Abilities across a wide range of subject areas.
THE PURPOSE OF GAMSAT
The purpose of GAMSAT is to assess the students' abilities to understand and analyse materials, to think critically about issues and, in the case of the Written Communication Section, to organise and express thoughts in a logical and effective way.
GAMSAT questions are based on materials drawn from a variety of sources.
They typically require candidates to read and think about a passage of writing, to interpret graphical displays of information, to use mathematical relationships and to apply reasoning skills to tables of data.
ELIGIBILITY
GAMSAT is available to any person who has completed a Bachelor Degree or an Undergraduate Honours Degree, or who will be in the penultimate (second-last) year or final year of study, at the time of sitting the test.
The GAMSAT Test is offered twice a year, in March and September.
A candidate must be a bona fide prospective applicant to a course for which GAMSAT is a prerequisite in order to sit for the GAMSAT.
There is no limit to the number of times a bona fide candidate may sit for the GAMSAT.
Candidates whose first degree is in a non-scientific field of study can still sit for the GAMSAT and succeed in the application for admission to one of the Graduate-entry Programmes.
A Science Degree is not always a prerequisite and institutions encourage applications from candidates who have achieved academic excellence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, to apply to the Graduate-entry Programmes.
However, it must be stressed that, success in the GAMSAT is unlikely without some Knowledge and Abilities in the Biological and Physical Sciences.
